| Medical city for Kota Semarahan
|
KUCHING: Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud plans to turn the new Sarawak International Medical Centre (SIMC) into a medical city.
Located in Kota Semarahan, a 20-minute drive from the city centre, SIMC, which is under construction, will be the first new public hospital in Kuching in over a century.
"When I planned the SIMC, I reserved quite a large plot of land surrounding the building, which is now 80 per cent completed.
"The idea was to make sure that there was enough room for us to have the medical city in the future," Taib said at the 100th anniversary celebration of Sarawak General Hospital. |

More cheaper hospitals to be built
|
The Government wants to build more cheaper hospitals, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
“We want hospitals that will be able to treat patients instead of having more luxury hospitals. We want hospitals that are practical and not five-star hospitals,” he told Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid (BN – Padang Besar).
To achieve this, Liow said the Prime Minister has asked that a competition be held to find the best hospital design that would help cut construction expenses.
He said the Government was concerned with the rising cost of medical fees in private hospitals.

Budget crafted to suit current economic situation
|
WE had a steady Budget 2011, crafted carefully to suit the current economic circumstances, where Malaysia is experiencing a recovery amidst a global recovery that is said to be uncertain.
There are a few things Malaysia can be pleased about: expected GDP growth of about 7% in 2010 (compared to a contraction of 1.7% in 2009), and reduction in the budget deficit from a high of more than 7% in 2009 to 5.6% in 2010. The plan to reduce the budget deficit further to 5.4% in 2011 is directionally correct and delivers on the commitment made last year to address the budget deficit that Malaysia has experienced since the 1998 Asian financial crisis.

Medical ad rules relaxed to woo foreign patients
|
PUTRAJAYA: More than 7,000 private clinics and 200 private hospitals nationwide can now advertise their services effective today.
The move is aimed at promoting medical tourism in the country.
The Health Ministry is also allowing these medical establishments to put up banners announcing the opening of new facilities, albeit for a limited period, and advertising overseas on condition they comply with the countries’ requirements.
Previously, advertisements were only confined to health magazines, directories, leaflets and billboards while press advertisements were limited to congratulatory messages. |

| Strong Surge in Malaysia’s Medical Technology Industry Provides Impetus For New Trade Show |
Malaysia’s strategic location and friendly investment laws have made it a new target for the medical industry, keen to establish manufacturing bases to serve rising national demand as well as ASEAN’s growing and increasingly wealthy populations. According to the Association of Malaysian Medical Industries, the consumption of medical devices in the country is expected to grow to USD877 million this year, increasing further to USD956 million in 2011 and USD1.7 billion in 2012. Given this promising scenario, Asia Medical 2011, the Asia International Medical Supplies. Equipment and Technology exhibition and conference is timely and will run from 11-13 October next year at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, with the full backing of the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH). |
